Sound system woes, Barbie Girl style

I've been having problems with getting my sound system set up so it will just work how I want it to, so I decided to write a song based on Barbie Girl.

I had esd, but sound got so choppy
In Diablo, and it's so slow
I was ALSA-bound, but then I lose the sound
Within a minute when I'm in it.

ALSA here is so unstable

I've XMMS - on Linux it's the best
I start my singin' and fight the demon
But as I move about, the music just cuts out
I find that violence sucks when it's in silence

I'm a blonde amazon and my music is gone
Want it back, read the FAQ, it no worky
Wanna dance with my lance and cause havok and pain
With a tune coming through - makes me happy

I can hear, I can play
But I can't do both at once
Oooh wah oooh

I use Ubuntu, but Wine's from Wine HQ
I followed this guide - (hope I got it right)
It started off just fine, but then after some time
XMMS crashed, and now it will not last

ALSA here is so unstable - ah ah ah yeah
I don't like this eSound server - oooh wah oooh, oooh wah oooh
OSS, it has no mixer - ah ah ah yeah
My last option is disk writer - oooh wah oooh, oooh wah oooh

Someone talk, fix my box, 'cause I need this to work
Need some pop music playing where demons do lurk
Start it up, hear that sound, then I'm moving around
In the rogue camp and then it goes silent.

I can hear, I can play
But I can't do both at once.
I can hear, I can play
But I can't do both at once.

ALSA here is so unstable - ah ah ah yeah
I don't like this eSound server - oooh wah oooh, oooh wah oooh
OSS, it has no mixer - ah ah ah yeah
My last option is disk writer - oooh wah oooh, oooh wah oooh

"Oh, I'm having so much fun!"
"Too bad. No sound for you!"
"Oh, I hate you ALSA!"

I have no sound at all since i reinstalled my linux with kernel mode ALSA... :( Well another reason for me to stay with windows :( Linux is only a "toy" anyway for me.

Don't get me wrong, I think the benefits of Linux far outweigh the drawbacks. Here I'm talking about problems with running a Windows game on Linux. Try getting a Linux-only game to work perfectly in Windows (without cheating and using vmware or something) and let me know how many problems you run into.

One of the great things about Linux is that you can get practically anything set up to work exactly as you like it if you play with it enough. As for just working out of the box, Ubuntu is usually very good at that, often better than Windows, as was the case in Simon Gerber's experience.
