Re: Is Google Fair?

This article entitled Is Google Fair? sure is quick to jump to conclusions about webmasters. I think Google is very fair about what it allows in the top results. Being fair doesn't mean any mediocre site should get to the top. Furthermore, it's untrue that new sites don't stand a chance at getting high rankings. When my Web browser standards support page was still pretty new, it went from unlisted to the #1 result for a few common terms like standards support in a matter of days.

There's no use complaining about how Google sorts websites. The top results are pretty consisently quality resources. If you want to be at the top, your product needs to be at the top. You need something that is unique and that people actually want. Your new mountain bike site isn't likely to get up there, because there are countless other mountain bike sites that probably have quality as good or better than yours. If you really want to get up there, you need a product that is so good that swarms of people will naturally link to you and talk about you. Those are the sites that deserve the top positions, and those are the sites Google gives the top positions to.
