New Computer and Linux

I haven't posted anything in a few days, but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy! As a matter of fact, that's the reason that I haven't posted. Here's a summary of the last few days...

A while ago, I bought a GeForce graphics card from my brother for pretty cheap, and also a 160 GB hard drive. I later discovered that my computer wasn't extensible enough to support my new hardware. I still had almost $500 left from the money I got after graduation, so I decided to use it to get a new computer. We had it custom-built and managed to get the price down to just over $500. I did some chores for my mom to cover the last bit of it.

Being fed up with Windows, I decided to try out Linux for the first time. My older brother set up Fedora Core 2 for me. The first thing I noticed was, as I expected, the system was much faster and slicker than Windows. There is a steeper learning curve, but I think I'm getting the hang of things now. I think the hardest part at the moment is installing things that you can't just apt-get.

I'm currently having trouble with installing Firefox. It uses a non-traditional installer for Linux, and for some reason it's been messing up somewhere. It will load when I log on as root (which I don't want to do too often), but when I'm a normal user it gives me errors upon starting and halts. I've searched on the Internet and seen lots of similar cases, so sooner or later I'll sit down and figure it out. For now, I'm using Mozilla 1.6.

I just finished transferring the stuff that was in the Files section to my Linux computer and patching up the script to accommodate for the new system. There are still some things that I need to fix, though. For example, the GIF thumbnailer is currently broken.

I still only have one line, monitor, keyboard, and mouse to share between my two computers. That situation will be fixed as soon as I can get my hands on some money. However, I think I'm going to use my Linux computer a lot more than my Windows one.
