Google Browse By Name
Google just implemented a new feature, called Browse By Name
, into the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer. It's kind of like the old I'm Feeling Lucky
feature, except it doesn't assume 100% accuracy. Instead, it figures out how confident it is with the number one result of the search query, and then it decides whether to direct you to that page or to display the regular search results instead.
Internet Explorer users can get the new version of the Google Toolbar and chose the option to enable Browse By Name. Once enabled, users simply type the name of the product, service, company, or website into the regular URL bar.
But wait, I almost forgot! Internet Explorer is an awful browser that should never be used. So how do you access this nifty feature? Luckily, there is another way for other browsers. Most modern browsers support search bars with customizable search services. We can make a search type just for Browse By Name! Direct your search query to http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=%s, where %s is the search query. Now set that search type to default, and you're ready to go!
I was never too fond of the I'm Feeling Lucky
search, because in most cases the first result just isn't quite what I'm looking for, but the Browse By Name feature fixes the flaws that I'm Feeling Lucky had. It will only go to the first result if it is very confident that that's what you're looking for, or else display the other possibilities. Another point scored by Google!
