Chobits

I recently finished watching the Chobits series. It was entertaining throughout, except I didn't like the ending. (Yes, I am about to tell what happened, so if you don't want a spoiler, I suggest you don't read on.)

I felt that the feel of the series started to break down toward the end. It kind of felt like Evangelion for a while, I thought. Not only did the whole destroying mankind thing seem inconsitent with the rest of the plot (although it might be better explained in the manga, which I haven't read), but the last part where Chii returns to normal after her mom formatted her memory just seemed kind of cheesy. Believe it or not, I think I would have actually been more satisfied with the ending if Chii were to remain formatted. In doing so, it would have made the firm statement that love between a human and a persocom always ends in failure. I realize that this was, in the end, what the creators were trying to contradict, but I don't think they did it effectively. There wasn't any sense of closure; it left you waiting for another episode to continue the story. Perhaps if they made the final scene a bit longer and allowed the characters to settle down it would have been more satisfying, but as it was I kind of felt like the scene was unfinished.

I hear that the manga covers a lot of things that the anime does not, such as what the chobits actually are. My older brother, who has read the manga, said that Chii wasn't even a chobits. It's possible that the ending might have been a better experience for those who have already read the manga, but in that case I would find it a fault of the creators of the anime.
